I was randomly surfing through YouTube videos when i chanced upon one titled the best kdramas of 2020. A lot of the commenters seemed upset that a drama called INTO THE RING wasn't included in the list.
Taking their opinions into consideration, i started watching this. The first couple of episodes packed a punch and i was hooked. Sadly the narrative fell there on, making it drag at certain places. Instead of 1 hour long of 16 episodes, if it had 8 episodes of the same duration, i feel it would have been better.
But overall it is not disappointing or bad, just slow. The plot covering some social issues in the backdrop of a political election, isn't too thick and not all the characters have their own struggles or backstory. Yet the ones that do end up making you feel something. Certain scenes make you think, make you re-realize that not everything is what as they seem. The acting was good, all the characters played their roles well.
One of my favaorite parts was that the 3 women - friends from school days were in different phases of their lives - one a married woman with a baby, one happily dating with no rush to get married while another (apparently) contently single running her own business. Though their family/love lives at times did pose some challenges due to our societal conventions yet the women never were apologetic about them. Their friendship where support and constructive criticism played important roles was truly one of the strong aspects of this drama.
I liked the romance part - sweet, short, organic - didn't feel forced or unnecessary or awkward. The other favorite thing about this drama showed a girl in a more powerful position, single and young to fall for her secretary who too was her friend from childhood. He too was efficient, young and single. Their romance becoming the topic of office gossip yet never deterring them from their actual goals and work - something commendable.
A few lines actually were thought provoking and i heart them.
For instance,
You cannot live the life people expect you to live. So do your best.
The hope for better tomorrow, isn't that what keeps us going? How will we live, if not on hopes?
A main character cannot always lie around.
