The Mozambican government will invest US$200 million to improve access roads in Cabo Delgado province, in northern Mozambique, an official source announced.

"We, here in Cabo Delgado province, are investing approximately 200 million dollars [for access roads]. It is a significant investment", said João Machatine, minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, to journalists, as part of a visit to Cabo Delgado province.

Interventions on the roads in Cabo Delgado begin in August, according to the minister, who reiterates the importance of the works being carried out with quality, in the case of "a major investment".

"We want consultants, inspectors, contractors to be chosen in a very judicious way", reiterated João Machatine.

Cabo Delgado province hosts the natural gas exploration project led by Total, the largest private investment in Africa (in the order of 20 billion euros), which has since been suspended due to insecurity in the region.

Armed groups have terrorized Cabo Delgado province since 2017, with some attacks being claimed by the Islamic State group.
