The UK is suffering unprecedented fuel shortages at present with lines stretching back for hours...
The Fuel Crisis Explained
What happened? - Fuel stations up and down the country ran dry - Long lines of cars, some stretching back for hours, just hoping to get fuel - Key workers unable to get to work: doctors, nurses, teachers, etc - Stations added a £30 cap on the limit that people can buy at the pump - 27% of forecourts are still closed even today, 40% of forecourts were out of petrol on Tuesday, compared with 65% on Sunday, so things are slowly improving, but this is just a temporary solution - Cars having their fuel siphoned off in the street, even on driveways - Numerous fights at filling stations including dozens of brawls and someone being threatened with a knife before their car was attacked
Why did this happen? - More than 100,000 HGV drivers short in the UK - The Office for National Statistics (ONS) estimates that there were 16,000 fewer EU nationals working as HGV drivers in the year ending March 2021, than in the previous year. Surprise!
Reasons sighted for the shortage: Drivers Retiring (average age 55), Brexit, IR35, Changing jobs (due to undesirable working conditions), Pay rates (as low as £9.50 per hour), Covid rules
This isn't isolated to just the UK though, the EU has a crisis all on it's own, they want any HGV drivers leaving the EU zone. Poland was short of more than 120,000 drivers, Germany 60,000.
The industry body said some 30,000 HGV driving tests did not take place last year because of the pandemic
More recently, drivers being told to self-isolate after being notified by the NHS Covid app is also adding to the problem.
What is the Government doing?
150 Soldiers ready to help out, not enough. The UK has 8,000 fuel stations… am I the only person here that does the math on these things?
The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) says it will also draw on some of the reserve fleet of 80 tankers which the government keeps for emergencies
And the visa's won't start until November anyway. 3 month visas won't work, they need to be at least 6 month visas, but even then, that's not enough, I'd give 12 month visas right now. And by the end of 12-months, if the plan that we put in place was good enough, the problem would be solved and the UK could get back to business with our own qualified driver. Who would give up their job for 3 months work in the UK? It's too much work. You'd have to arrange short term accommodation for 3 months
Let's get to the main problem and the solution here: The DVLA (Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency) is the problem, you won't find this is any media, are you ready… The DVLA currently has a backlog of 54,000 licenses. The DVLA Needs to go on a massive recruitment campaign immediately and clear the backlog, this isn't rocket science. That will solve over 50% of this crisis without a huge effort… this is the path of least resistance…
Some drivers report phoning for 5 days straight and not being able to get through on the DVLA helpline, then when they finally do get through they are asked to send an email. Have a guess what response they get from the email they send? "Hi thanks for contacting us, we ask that you please call the DVLA hotline…" it's the exact same phone number they were calling in the first place. It's so inefficient. Medical checks to get the licence is a minimum of 4 weeks but can take as long as 12 weeks!
If we don't fix this soon, we're going to see businesses not being able to survive because of the increase in the wages, or they pass on those costs to consumers, adding to inflation. This can all be solved very quickly, 8-10 weeks to get each driver trained with a license in hand.

Okay I think we are live welcome ladies and gents I hope you are doing great today. Today we're going to talk about the fuel crisis that's going on in the united kingdom let me just check we are live a second here yeah great so two points firstly then we just need to recap over one thing I mentioned last week which was the seven energy companies that actually collapsed so they were Hub Money Plus, Utility Point, People's Energy, PFP Green and Avro so they collapsed last week three more energy companies in the UK actually collapsed yesterday so they were in Stroga, Igloo Energy and Symbiote Energy so if those are your suppliers that is another three energy companies that have collapsed it just seems to be as though we're going from crisis to crisis at the moment and it's very interesting seeing this pattern because before people used to say oh Neil doom and gloom and you know can you give us some positive videos and you know this sort of stuff and now I'm having all of those people who say unsubscribe because you're spreading doom and gloom they all seem to be coming back now and commenting about you know just how accurate a lot of these things were and now we are seeing all these crises come in day in and day out so this week has been just insane and if you remember last week's stream I actually touched on this about 30 seconds at the end of the video the reason I didn't give it a lot of emphasis was because I honestly didn't expect it to happen that fast I mean we remember we were talking about the hockey stick effect I didn't think that the fuel crisis would explode within 12 hours I mean the very next day that was it exploded and by Sunday the you know 60 percent I believe it was of 65 of all fuel stations in the united kingdom that's 8,000 fuel stations in the united kingdom had closed down couldn't you couldn't get in no fuel and of the others there were backlogs up to three hours long people queueing so this is you know just to give you context of what's been happening this last week just another point as well my monthly stream so the big one is Saturday so it's this Saturday instead of Sunday so we're going to be doing it on Saturday and as always Thursday at 9:00 p.m. and the stream is Saturday now okay so what happened then let's start with that what happened fuel stations up and down the country ran dry long lines of cars key workers unable to get to work so doctors nurses healthcare workers teachers so there were a lot of surgeries missed there were a lot of medical appointments which really annoys me because already there's been all these issues with people getting to medical appointments the last 18 months and all these problems a lot of doctors are still not back at work so this is not helpful for this crisis to come in and I'm actually going to tell you at the end how we can resolve this easily by spring of 2022 so in the next six months we can actually resolve this entire crisis if the government takes the action so make sure if any of you know Boris send in my video because I'm going to give you exactly what to do to solve this crisis within six months we'll cover that shortly also fuel stations added a 30 pound cap on the amount of fuel that you could buy so not very much at all what's that a quarter of a tank for some people so as of today I just checked 10 minutes ago 27 of fuel stations are still closed 40 percent were out of petrol on Tuesday and 65 were out on Sunday now the government's saying oh everything's gonna be fine by the end of today they said this morning Thursday don't believe anything they're saying it's not gonna be fine everything won't be resolved by today I can assure you of that it's gonna be a lot longer yet because these things go into a negative spiral you see so once some people start talking about it you know everyone then starts jumping on the bandwagon and I was really surprised the government had the cheek this week to blame the road haulage association for causing the panic no they didn't cause the panic the government ministers that said there's going to be shortages for Christmas and you know fuel shortages this week and food shortages etcetera they caused the crisis the government minister wasn't the road haulage industry who they're trying to pass the blame on to cars were had fuel siphoned off in the middle of the street even on driveways there's even talks of people being attacked on at their own home because they came out and disturbed people smashing off their fuel caps numerous fights at filling stations including dozens of brawls and someone being threatened with a knife before the person started kicking and smashing up their car people are saying what's going on you know as if is this really true is all of this really happening and people are shocked by it why am I not shocked why are my subscribers who have been with me for 18 months or more not shocked and why are all these people who thought this was all just make-believe and conspiracy theories before now rushing back to the channel to watch all of the videos why is that because we are in this fourth turning now if you've read the book or not so you have four sort of turns in every secular so we are deep into this fourth turning now and we're not even in the deepest part of it so all of this you know social breakdown and things this is just the beginning it isn't the end things aren't going to turn around very quickly that's why we're seeing crisis and we're jumping from crisis to crisis because it's accelerating now and it's just going to keep accelerating so we are going to see a lot more social unrest we are going to see a lot more doom and gloom as people like to say it's going to get worse before it gets better so I think the next three years are going to be very, very, bad for all of this okay so number two then so let me give you some background and why did all of this happen so the first and most obvious thing is we have a shortage of a hundred thousand HGV which is heavy goods vehicle drivers in the UK the office for national statistics also estimates there were 16 000 fewer EU nationals working as HGV drivers in the year ending march 2021 surprise what do you think is going to happen when everyone goes back to their home countries in the EU and you have you know these lockdowns and making it very difficult for them to get back a lot of them don't even want to get back and we'll talk about these 5,000 visas nonsense in a second here's a key one the industry actually warned Boris Johnson the prime minister in June that if action wasn't taken within the next two or three months we would have a crisis and they are saying that no action was taken on that so I think some someone has to be held accountable there also the decline in the value of the pound against the euro since the Brexit vote has made a lot of the EU drivers not want to actually come back to the UK not just that the stuff going on with the EU we'll talk about that in a second the tax changes as well IR35 I know many of you will know of that many of you won't know about that but this is just more of a tax grab by the government to actually tax people more so a lot of the drivers are saying I i don't want to you know pay all this tax so they've headed off as well so there's a lot going on but I think the main reason so I've been talking to a couple of drivers this week and what they've been sharing with me is that well the average age of a HGV driver is 55. so when you have someone who's age 55 they are nearing retirement okay so you've had a lot of people of that age group who have who have retired in the last year who may have retired a little earlier than they would have done so that's one reason next one is Brexit obviously we know about that a lot of the workers went home ir35 changing jobs due to undesirable work conditions so it's very interesting I didn't know about the work conditions of these drivers and it is pretty tough you know honestly when I heard about the conditions of it I did think that would be a fairly tough job and for low wages so personally I wouldn't I mean I enjoy driving so that's one thing but would I want to do it for x amount of hours every single day for low wages maybe not it would take the enjoyment out of it so I can understand the issues there pay rates as low as 9 pound 50 per hour and the last reason was all the Covid rules a lot of drivers have just said they don't want to deal with all of the Covid rules that were in place but this isn't just isolated to the UK by the way this exists in Europe as well this is what isn't being talked about and actually the biggest thing here isn't being talked about on the media it's not in the newspapers or anything I'm going to tell you that at the end I think you're going to be really shocked by this point that that exists and how it can easily be solved so in the EU zone the EU has a crisis on its own and they don't want HGV drivers leaving to go to the UK some people say that the EU is trying to punish the UK for Brexit Poland is short of more than 120,000 drivers so if we're short a hundred thousand they're short hundred and twenty thousand Germany sixty thousand a lot of other countries as well they're short of drivers so this is from the industry body then they said 30,000 HGV tests that were supposed to be done last year were not done because it was deemed unsafe so a lot of the people just simply couldn't get their tests and now there's a huge backlog as well to actually do this more recently drivers are still being told to self-isolate they're getting pinged by the national health service app being told to self-isolate so these are this is the background the context to this so number three then what is the government doing and just like last week I've got some absurd stuff for you here this is really ridiculous so this is from the business secretary this is from Quasi Quatern I don't know how to pronounce his name had said there are signs that the petrol crisis which has seen long queues outside four courts across Britain is stabilizing today I don't believe that for a minute you only have to drive to your local forecourt by the way if you've got fuel and you'll see that it's not stabilizing he said that soldiers so the army would be delivering fuel within the next couple of days to help relieve supply issues we'll mention this in a second the department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy the BEIS says it will also draw on their reserve of 80 tankers which are kept for emergencies now 80 tankers isn't a lot when you've got that many fuel stations throughout the country so eight thousand fuel stations so what's that it's like one percent they've got one percent there 150 soldiers then that are going to drive these tankers well if you think about this 150 divided into what the 8,000 that would take a long time what would that take I think it's 53 days and that's if no one filled up with fuel and no one else was delivering just to get round and fill everything up because it compounds of course like this this might help a little bit but it's not going to have a huge impact at all and so let's get on to this visa then the 5,000 foreign fuel tank and food lorry drivers as well as five and a half thousand poultry workers to deal with the Christmas turkey shortage by the way you heard the Christmas turkey shortage first here on my channel so this is what they're saying 5,000 fuel tankers this is what they're not saying or they're not specifying I'm going to put myself like I always do I apply logic and common sense so I'm gonna put myself so I'm a family man at home in wherever eastern Europe family husband wife couple of kids right why would I take a three-month work visa to go to the UK I mean why am I not working at home like there's a shortage in the EU surely I'd be working anyway if I was an HGV driver why would I leave as we're going into winter as well dark nights cold why would I leave my home travel all the way to the UK with all the restrictions and testing and everything else you've got to do where am I going to live am I going to what am I going to do rent a room somewhere what with one or two suitcases as well that's not really much of a life I just I can't see it I mean again I like to work through these things methodically in my mind and I can't see it I just wouldn't I wouldn't do it I wouldn't leave my family now here's the difference let's say it was 12 months it was a 12-month visa yeah, yeah, I probably do it because I know I've got job security for a year I'm gonna earn some money I can get myself a tenancy agreement for a year no problem at all get myself a you know a short lease for one year it you know maybe bring my family over something like that I'm not going to uproot my family for three months it doesn't make any sense I don't know if they've thought all of this through and the visas don't start until late November anyway so you're talking more than a month, six weeks it could even be two months before they actually kick this in it's too late by that time next then what else the government's saying there'll be three intensive boot camps to train 3 000 people to become drivers with another thousand to be trained through courses funded by the adult education budget well again who's doing the mathematics here a hundred thousand shortfall 4,000 we're gonna train this year that's only four percent of the shortfall I mean what am I missing something is my math is off here surely they can see this it doesn't make any sense I don't get it I really don't you see the problem with our government and a lot of governments is that they are being reactive as opposed to proactive so let's say I'm one of these secretaries of transport or business if the body of the road haulage association comes to me and says Neil we have got this crisis that's going to be here in two months unless action is taken I'm not going to say oh okay thanks for your concerns shoot I'm gonna take that really seriously because that's my job on the line but these politicians aren't doing that and I'll tell you how they reacted to this in a second it is just crazy what like the hubris of some of these politicians so this statement was put out in may of this year so bear in mind this is five months ago now the department of transport says it is well aware of HGV driver shortages and does not need reminding this is what I mean by the hubris or the arrogance of it obviously they did need reminding this one was from back in July as well so transport secretary Grant Shapps said he was quote on top of the shortage and already had taken decisive measures I love it when they use words like that so what were these decisive measures you may ask he increased HGV drivers daily limits from nine hours to 10 hours per day sorry what is that a joke 100,000 shortfall and his solution was to increase that's already a long day of driving nine hours to 10 hours I mean again logic common sense surely wouldn't that make things more dangerous you know that's just think of what you're driving you're driving this huge truck that weighs a lot of tonnage there and you're going to increase people from 9 hours to 10 hours a day I don't know it doesn't sound like the best idea to me personally so that was his solution there again back in July so this was you know back in July of this year a government spokesperson said it had already taken bold and decisive action on the shortages including funding apprenticeships and focusing on improving diversity in the field one of the biggest problems we have right now he said is that just one percent of hg HGV drivers are women this really annoys me sorry this infuriates me how they keep going on about all this diversity and equality and you know pronouns we all we need this big recruitment campaign for you know we need to address people they and them and all this no stop all of that get the like I guarantee you 100 if I got 100 women in a in a room and I said to those women okay let me give you an option a or b I need you to vote option a the industry is like mainly men but you're going to get your you know your deliveries on time fuel's going to be delivered on time you know everything's going to be fine or we're going to get you know all these different categories of people in to the to the industry but you know we don't spend all the money here we're taking the focus on some of the important things you might not get food you might you know the shortfalls in in fuel and all this I guarantee you at least 95 percent if not 100 of those women I could be like yeah I don't I couldn't care less who delivers the stuff why is this even why are you asking me this this is ridiculous right if you if you're a lady watch him please comment let me know because I just don't think that that I just don't think that this is the case that people are sat there going you know what we need more diversity in the HGV driver industry this is an outrage we I just I I've never heard this I don't think I've heard a single person ever say this no let's focus on getting people into those jobs look it's not discriminatory if if women or you know different people or groups want to work as drivers everyone has the same option to go in and work as a driver it's not as if there's you know there's roadblocks that says oh no, no, sorry you can't, no you cannot go in and do that job I'm very no anyone can go in and do the job this is ridiculous I don't know why they're focusing on diversity when they should be focusing on recruitment and training and backlogs annoys me and by the way if that's what they consider bold and decisive action I think we've got a bigger problem going on here because imagine and this comes down to generations as well different generations every 20-25 years a new generation is born who are very different from the last but they're not as different from the one before that so this is why every 50 is why grandparents get on better with their grandchildren they do with their children etc. because of the generational differences so what we have right now is we have like I see it that we're more in in terms of between a peace time and a war footing I think we're really in this this middle area here and but yet the politicians are soft like they're very, very, soft if that is our idea of bold and decisive action god help us all because they they just they don't have any like strength behind them and look at what happened with world war ii the politicians in the house of parliament really did not like Winston Churchill I mean we all know the story a lot of them hated him but because the politicians were too soft and they couldn't make any decisions they were like right Winston Churchill is the guy for the job and he took over and then we know he slept four hours a night and he did you know what he did we won't get into it into all of that but this is the difference you see this is the difference in politicians you know you've heard the expression soft times create soft people right or soft leaders hard times then create hard leaders so this is the issue we we have right now I can just imagine the prime minister right now imagine we got attacked or something by another power militarily and he's like wow we're taking bold and decisive action today I've spoken to a few manufacturing plants just to suggest we should you know if they want to make some war materials for us I've also put the feelers out to the younger generation see if they'd be interested in doing some work experience with the military like it's madness okay now what else is the government doing some councils this is going to annoy you by the way some councils are offering to loan their refuse drivers to become delivery drivers so the people that come and pick up all of your refuse this outside in America you call it trash right so these drivers the councils are offering those drivers for a few weeks to a couple of months to help with the shortages yeah of course they are because guess what they don't have to pay those drivers they're going to save a lot of money in not coming and picking up our trash and our rubbish that we've got this is like what are they thinking I'm on a rant tonight aren't I okay so I just don't think any of these processes here are gonna solve this this crisis and again so the transport secretary grant shaft has blamed the road haulage association for triggering a rush on petrol stations this of course has just been like blown back in his face because they're the ones that that told the government in the first place about this so okay let's jump on I'm going to give you a few of my thoughts and how we're going to solve this crisis okay so here's what I would do right so I always tell you what I would do I am the you know the transport secretary or small business secretary first thing I'd do I would drop all the arrogance in the hubris and I would call upon the top people in the haulage industry and you know grocery stores etcetera and I'd have a board of some of the smartest minds in a room around the table I would be a facilitator I'm not gonna you know stand there and start talking all this inflated ego stuff I'm just gonna listen I'm going to say what what's that what's the issues going on and what are the solutions let's get it all on a whiteboard let's get some bullet points down how are we going to solve this you see they don't do that instead the government says we don't need anyone to tell us you know we don't need reminding we're on top of it they're not on top of it increasing hours from nine hours to ten hours is not a solution it is idiotic really but anyway I'm going to get to the one I said at the start that the media aren't talking about it's not on the news and stuff this is the main problem and here's the solution the DVLA so that is the Driver Vehicle Licensing Agency is the problem here okay they currently have are you ready for this a backlog of 54,000 licenses, 54,000 licenses backlog due to you know what I'm gonna say Covid that's the reason for their backlog I don't get it again why how is that affecting the administrative staff who can work from home processing these applications it does not make any sense this is why I say this a lot of this is just too suspicious all these things that keep happening all the time so this is what they need to do they need to go on a big recruitment campaign recruit admin staff right now and also get back into the office that's going to be an unpopular thing I said there because people say oh you know their health and whatever else but okay you know people are not as effective working from home I think we all know that it's that you've got to have a lot of discipline to just be sat there and work as hard as you do in the office but some people do a lot of people have that discipline but not you're not going to get 100 so already you're going to lose some work hours there from people who aren't working 100 at home why is there this big backlog I mean if you think about it 100 000 issue shortage 54,000 backlog just clear the backlog you've now got 54,000 in you've solved half the crisis without really doing anything you're just clearing a backlog a problem that's already there this was interesting so a couple of guys I spoke to this week and also I saw this this clip of on social media as well this guy who phoned in so like so this is what this guy told me anyway so licenses expired during covet so a lot of people's licenses so HGV, HGV-1 needs a medical a medical every five years to do it well this guy was saying he was phoned in the DVLA helpline for four to five days and he couldn't get through to anyone and I'm hearing this a lot a lot of people are saying it you just can't get through to anyone and then eventually he got through and they said oh can you send an email so he was like okay he sent an email he got a response a few days later saying oh thanks you need to call up to get your medical pack guess what the number was the exact same number he'd called in the first place for four or five days so he'd already lost you know over a week eight nine ten days already and he couldn't book his doctor's appointment to get the medical because he didn't have the medical pack so it's like the chicken in the egg so all of these inefficiencies are going on it's causing this massive backlog so there's all these people that want to get out there driving they just can't get their licenses because of these backlogs it's madness I feel like I'm going crazy even telling the story I just can't believe it I know how difficult it is to get medical appointments right now personally I had to change doctor because mine was just incompetent in fact I knew more than he did in some regards it was ridiculous just from doing some google searches it's ridiculous a change to a different doctor have a guess how long it is before you can get your initial appointment to get registered seven weeks seven weeks and it's not even going to see a doctor because they they're short by half of their doctors at the moment half the doctors haven't gone back to work don't ask me why I haven't looked into that so seven weeks to get in and then it's a nurse giving me a phone call in fact she was supposed to call me last week she didn't even call right so I know what's going on right now with all of this this is very, very, difficult this crisis is getting worse because of all these inefficiencies and it's creating this downward spiral that's accelerating so quickly that by the time you start correcting these things it's too late because it's like you know two steps forward and one step back except it's the opposite at the moment it's really not positive at all, it's two steps going backwards and one step forward so you just keep going back and back and back but I think honestly if we don't fix this crisis soon you're going to see a lot more businesses collapsing because they a won't be able to get their goods delivered b they're not going to be able to afford to actually pay the wages of these of these drivers because you're going to have to start putting the wages up and if they do put the wages up guess what's going to happen those costs are going to be passed on to consumers and that means more inflation the government's already starting to panic now most governments because the inflation is starting to run away that's why they are saying inflation is only x percent and then it puts in brackets or small print excluding housing cost rent mortgage energy and food like what I mean what else is there when you exclude housing like living energy you know your home energy or or fuel like that and food see that this is this is the reason why they're excluding this stuff because they're exploding out of control these are the main things so I think personally because it takes eight to ten weeks to actually train so actually it's only a couple of weeks to train an HGV driver but then it takes eight to ten weeks I've been told to actually get your license in hand so if they just start now with the backlog but at the same time they get all these new people coming through because look I'm hearing every day ai and robotics has replaced x you know amount of jobs I've lost my job to a robot I've lost my job to AI, etc. well and again this is a personal choice if you know someone is in that position they've lost their job and they want to work HGV drivers some of these wages now I've seen advertise 80 000 a year but at the same time it does look like a tough job you know we can't beat around the bush with this it does look like it is a difficult job it doesn't look easy just from what I've heard and I'm speaking to a couple of guys does not sound like it's an easy job so it is an option there I think any anything else I want to add no I think that's really all I want to talk about with this today as you know I don't just do a surface level I do a ton of research all myself into this stuff because I know whenever things just don't click together I smell a rat and I want to dive into it and find out the truth and this is the truth that they're not talking about it is these the DVLA is the problem it's not Brexit and all these other things although that's contra it's not even it's not even Brexit right that's contributed to it but if they'd have just allowed the HGV drivers to continue working you wouldn't have this issue but personally I think the UK can solve this this all on their own we've got enough people that are willing to work we've got the backlog of people who want to come back to work they're waiting for their licenses you can get a lot of people through there's been a lot of surveys a lot of young people are interested in doing it I mean how committed they are I don't know but I think this this could be solved all on its own really with the UK without even needing to bring drivers in from the EU so other than that up guys I'll see you on Saturday monthly stream this is the big one and I'll get a video out for you on Sunday as well on Sunday's video I've actually gone around filming in a city in the UK just to show the truth of what's happening with all these collapses retail collapses so you'll get that video on Sunday as well so three videos this week for you please click the like button I forgot to say it again earlier subscribe if you haven't already but apart from that yeah have a have a great day take care God Bless
