Bout is in the news this week after the Biden administration allegedly offered a prisoner exchange where he'd be swapped for WNBA star Brittney Griner and suspected spy Paul Whelan. At the center of a proposed swap for Brittney Griner is Viktor Bout, likely the highest profile Russian in U.S. custody. Gottesfeld and Bout are both being held at USP Marion, "a medium-security United States federal prison for male inmates in unincorporated Williamson County, Illinois." The Daily Mail and other outlets have also reported Bout is being held at USP Marion, America's first federal supermax prison.
