Surgeon reconstructs severed nose of youth using skin from forehead
Nepali expat had lost the tip of the nose after falling onto a sharp object while shifting his accommodation
Dubai: A 24-year-old Nepali expat, who cut off a part of his nose after falling onto a sharp object, had undergone a multi-stage complex organ reconstruction procedure here at a private hospital. The plastic surgeon reconstructed the amputated part nose of the patient by using the skin flap from the forehead.
Nishan Gurung, a storekeeper in Jebel Ali, met with the accident while shifting his accommodation on 6th June. According to him, he was walking down a staircase with knives and other kitchen equipment and slipped. He fell onto a sharp object.
"Blood was oozing out from the wound. I sat on the staircase and tried to stop the bleeding with my T-shirt. It took me some time to realize what had happened to me. A few minutes later, I called my friend for help. Even then, I did not realize that the part of my nose has got cut off. My friend came and took me to the room. It was then I realized that my nose had detached," said Nishan.
He applied ice, and it stopped the bleeding. It was late at night, and Nishan decided to go to a doctor the next day.
On 7 June 2022, Nishan went to Aster Hospital, Mankhool, to seek the help of a surgeon. The doctors there referred him to the plastic surgeon in Aster Hospital, Qusais, where heconsulted Dr. Rajkumar Ramachandran, a specialist in plastic surgery.
"The doctor informed me that I had to undergo a complex procedure that would happen in two stages. In the first procedure, the doctor would take a skin flap from the forehead and mould it into the shape of a nose that would match mine. In the second stage, the reconstructed nose was attached to the severed portion and joined with sutures," added Nishan.
Nishan underwent the first procedure on 11 June 2022 and the second procedure, three weeks apart, on 5 July 2022. It was a success, and Nishan responded well to the treatment.
According to Dr. Rajkumar, it would take three-six months for Nishan to recover completely. "We have fixed his nose with a skin flap from his forehead, which has good matching qualities with that of the nose. It would take some time for the wound to completely heal. He will then have a good cosmesis," said the doctor.
"Once the wound heals, the nose will look normal. Nishan would then be able to feel and sense his nose," Dr. Rajkumar explained.
