Mozambique's cabinet has established the Scientific and Technical Commission on Climate Change (CTCMC), granting the entity the responsibility of advising the government on the prevention and mitigation of the impact of extreme weather events, as per an official resolution.
The resolution, published in the Official Government Gazette also empowers the CTCMC to undertake tasks such as conducting assessments and surveys to identify climate change risks.
Moreover, the newly formed entity has been assigned the duties of identifying priority areas for intervention and mobilizing the necessary human, technical, and financial resources to prevent and mitigate the effects of extreme climate events.
The CTCMC will also evaluate the effectiveness and appropriateness of policies, strategies, sector plans, and legal instruments concerning climate change.
In addition to advising on technical and scientific solutions to enhance the efficiency of prevention and response to natural disasters, the CTCMC will monitor the progress made in implementing adaptation and mitigation plans for the effects of climate change.
The Minister of Transport and Communications will serve as the chairperson of the CTCMC, supported by the Deputy Minister of Public Works, Housing, and Water Resources.
Comprising 21 members with diverse backgrounds in specialties such as Disaster Risk Management, Meteorology, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Water Resources, Conservation and Restoration, Architecture, and Humanities, the CTCMC is well-equipped to carry out its mandate.
Mozambique is frequently subjected to severe climatic events like cyclones and floods, making it one of the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, according to numerous national and international studies.
